KABUL: Local officials in Kandahar province say all civilian flights have been suspended following Taliban rocket attacks on parts of the airport.
Massoud Ahmad Pashtun, director of Ahmad Shah Abdali Airport, said on Sunday that the Taliban had fired several rockets at parts of the airport in the morning, but that no damage had been done.
“When the airport is hit by rockets, it is natural that airlines do not accept the danger and passengers do not risk their lives,” Pashtun said, stressing civilian flights from would resume soon.
It is said that several rockets hit parts of the airport on Saturday evening as well.
Kandahar Airport is located 30 km from Kandahar city in the Daman and Dand districts of the province, which house several important military centers, including the 205th Atul Corps.
Afghan officials say security forces have recaptured parts of Dand district in the province on Saturday and clashes were ongoing between the two sides in the district.
The Taliban have not yet commented on the rocket attacks on Kandahar airport.
