Kabul: In Ghor province, Afghanistan, the aftermath of devastating floods has left over 1,000 families displaced, seeking refuge in open spaces. The Taliban Ministry of Refugees issued a statement detailing the widespread destruction wrought by the floods, particularly in the Balamorghab district. According to the ministry, 562 homes have been completely destroyed, while an additional 303 have been partially damaged.
The impact extends beyond residential areas, with agricultural lands, power poles, trees, and gardens all ravaged by the flooding. Moreover, crucial transportation routes connecting villages within the district have been rendered impassable. The extent of financial losses incurred is expected to rise once a more comprehensive assessment can be conducted, pending the reopening of these routes.
While the ministry acknowledged one fatality and several injuries, concerns have been raised regarding the accuracy of the reported casualties. Local sources, citing incidents over the past two days, indicate a higher death toll resulting from floods and lightning strikes across multiple provinces, including Herat, Uruzgan, and Ghor.
The situation underscores the urgent need for humanitarian assistance and support in the affected regions as communities grapple with the aftermath of the natural disaster.
