AT-KABUL: Floods triggered by heavy rain in eastern Afghanistan killed scores of people, damaged tens of houses and blocked routes to several districts.
Sarhadi Zwak, spokesman for Laghman governor office, said that heavy rains in five districts of the province triggered floods that led to killing of four people, destruction of tens of houses and hundreds jeribs of land. He added that heavy snow has blocked road to Dawlat Shah District of the province.
Zwak said that rockslides in some parts of Laghman province have blocked Kabul-Jalalabad highway. He added that efforts were on to reopen the highway.
According to a source in Nuristan province, an avalanche has struck a house in the province adding that 14 people are missing. The source added that routes to all districts of the province were blocked due to heavy snow and rain.
In the meantime, an official in eastern Nangarhar province said that floods have killed several people and destroyed houses.
Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, spokesman for the Nangarhar province, said that several children were missing in Zangyee area of Jalalabad city. He added that rescue team has been sent to the area.
Another source in the province said that floods have damaged 181 houses in Surkhrod, Behsood, Pachir Agam and other districts of the province.
The sources added that hails have destroyed crops in some parts of Pachir Agam district.
