Floods leave many homeless in Kunar, Nangarhar

AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: Torrential rains wreaked havoc in eastern parts of the country as flash floods destroy scores of homes and crops standing on hundreds of acres of agricultural land in Kunar and Nangarhar provinces.

Provincial director of the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) in Kunar told a local news agency on Monday that torrential rains in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Chitral district resulted in floods in Kunar province.

Ghulam Sabat said that the Kunar River was overflowing. According to the provincial director several districts including Sarkano, Khas, Nari, Manogai and Chapa Dara were hit by the flash floods.

Heavy rains have flooded the Chitral River which flows into the Kunar province.

Sabat said that residents of the affected districts, particularly Khas Kunar and Sarkano, suffered heavy financial losses, adding that 37 homes were destroyed completely and a mosque was damaged partially in the two districts. Rice and maize crops were also destroyed on 425 acres.

The director said that a team has been dispatched to Chapa Dara, Nari and Manogai districts to assess the damages. “Fortunately, there was no casualty as locals in the high and medium risk areas were informed in advance about the floods,” he said.

Spokesman to the provincial governor, Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, told media that at least 10 homes and a school building were destroyed by floods in Nangarhar.

The spokesman said that around 100 families had been displaced due to the floods. Crops standing on hundreds of acres of farmlands in Kama district were destroyed. The district is bordering with Kunar province.

Flood-affected families have asked the government to speed up the assessment process and provide relief to them. Many people in the two provinces and Badakhshan are still waiting for humanitarian assistance.

More floods in Kunar and Nangarhar provinces are expected as downpour continues in Chitral district. Heavy rains have been predicted this week in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s northern district.
