Kabul: Global charity Save the Children reported that heavy rains and floods in Baghlan province, northern Afghanistan, have left approximately 40,000 children homeless. Arshad Malik, the charity’s country director in Afghanistan, emphasized the emotional toll on children who have lost not only their homes but also schools and familiar places.
The floods have claimed over 330 lives, primarily in Baghlan, with additional casualties in Takhar, Badakhshan, and Ghor provinces, according to the Afghanistan office of the World Food Programme and local officials. Concerns about a rising death toll and the spread of infectious diseases, particularly among children, have prompted global organizations to respond.
The World Health Organization has dispatched eight emergency response teams to monitor infection risks in the affected areas. Afghanistan, labeled as one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change, faces increasing instances of extreme weather events such as floods and droughts, as highlighted by the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund in a statement released on Sunday.
