AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: Chief of the Women Affairs Directorate of Daikundi said that cases of girls fleeing forced marriages in the province have increased.
Zakia Razai said that forced marriages cause girls to leave homes in order to marry a person of their choice. She furthered that it is hard to find a couple that married each other without compulsion.
Daikundi province had reported most cases of girls fleeing forced marriages in the country, last year.
Zakia Razai told Voice of America that these incidents has been creating and increasing violence against women, corruption and even the imprisonment of the escaped girls.
She said that 40 cases of girls’ fleeing forced marriages were reported in the first five months of the current year which shows an increase of 15 percent as compared to the past year.
She said that life of forced marriages is short and end in divorce or violence against women.
She expressed her concerns over the issue and said that these incidents are unprecedentedly increasing.
High cost of marriage, dowry of up to Afg1,000,000 and forced marriages are said to be the main causes behind the incidents.
