AT-KABUL: Afghan national security forces have retaken the Ghormach district of northwestern Faryab province, from the Taliban, which was overrun by them several days ago, officials said on Sunday.
The national security forces have launched a major three day offensive including ground and aerial attacks on Taliban militants who have overrun the Ghormach district of Faryab province, local officials said.
The provincial police chief Baryali Basharyar Parwari confirms the security forces retook control of Ghormach district of northern Faryab province, adding that the national security forces raised the national flag of Afghanistan over the headquarters of the district early morning on Saturday.
Baryali Bsharyar also confirmed the Taliban had killed the district police chief Abdul Majeed Gilem Bafi along with 12 other policemen who were captured alive when the district fell to Taliban on October 18.
He did not disclose details regarding the casualties of Afghan forces and the Taliban militants during the offensive.
The Interior Ministry said the first Vice President Abdul Rashid Dostum led the operation.
More troops were deployed when the Taliban captured the district.
