KABUL: The former mayor of Maidan Shahar, capital of Wardak province, has returned home, hoping to help the people who are in dire need of humanitarian assistance.
Zairfa Ghafari, who was appointed as mayor of Maidan Shahar in 2018, by ex-Afghan President Ashraf Ghani—who fled the country amid a rapid takeover of Kabul by the Islamic Emirate in mid-August 2021.
Ghafari called the drastic humanitarian crisis the reason for her return to the country.
She said that she will work under the national and Islamic values to support the country. Ghafari denies any willingness to be involved in governmental and political matters again.
“I came here to help—and, if I am able, to build trust between the people of Afghanistan and the international community,” she said.
“I have no expectation of someone giving me a position relevant to the government or politics,” she added. The former mayors have been awarded the International Women of Courage (IWOC) Award.
