AT-KABUL: Southern Kandahar’s Police Chief Gen. Abdul Raziq has claimed that he had recently participated in talks with Taliban’s Quetta Council leaders and is encouraging them to contemplate entering peace talks with the Afghan government.
And according to Gen. Raziq, almost half of the Taliban leaders representing the Quetta Shura are eager for reconciliation.
Gen. Raziq says he has spoken with Taliban leaders at least four times, trying to encourage the group to start peace negotiations.
He alleges his meetings with Taliban began two months ago, and envoys from the U.S., Saudi Arabia, and certain European countries are also involved in those efforts to revive peace talks.
The Taliban group has not commented regarding the latest claims of Gen. Raziq so far.
This comes as reports emerged earlier suggesting that the Afghan officials and Taliban group leaders will participate in the summit in Azerbaijan to discuss peace prospects.
However, the Taliban group spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid rejected the reports and said none of the leaders of the group will take in the summit.
