KABUL: President Ashraf Ghani strongly denounced the republication of insulting cartoons of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) by the French magazine Charlie Hebdo.
A media statement issued by his office on Sunday quoted President Ghani as saying that freedom of expression should be used in a constructive manner to promote peaceful coexistence among followers of various religions.
President Ghani strongly condemned the act and termed republication of the caricatures as an irresponsible act and insult to the sacred religion of Islam.
“For years Afghanistan has, more than any other country, been suffering from war and violence. Thus, this country, better than others, feels the need for peaceful coexistence among the entire nations of the world”, the president added.
The French magazine republished caricatures of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), after an armed attack on its office that left 12 of its staffers dead.
