KABUL: President Ashraf Ghani assured journalists that any government officials who treat them violently would be introduced to judiciary to punish them.
“Information has now entered every sector of economy and society. Economy and society are unable to move on without the help of information,” the president said on Monday among a number of reporters gathered to celebrate the National Reporters’ Day.
Ghani spoke about new relations “between government and media”, that he said indicates coordination and empowering of democracy.
He added that the journalist support fund would be financed from the budgets of 2018 and 2019, instructing government and media joint commission to clarify obstacles before journalists.
The president emphasized that bullying culture should end and problems need to be solved through understanding, not through threats.
Hasina Safi, acting information and culture minister called the signing of law of access to information and the fund of journalist support as big achievements, saying that the ministry works with the cooperation of media companies on a common policy for better coordination between government and media.
Then a number of journalists spoke on behalf of others, sharing problems and challenges they are facing with the president and called for government’s help in resolve.
President Ghani conferred government medals to a number of journalists to appreciate their services in reporting.
