AT-KABUL: President Ashraf Ghani called on concerned officials to take all necessary measures to resolve the issue of lack of clean potable water in Kabul city.
In a meeting with members of City Reform and Development Commission, President Ghani urged the commission to devise a mechanism to provide clean drinking water to residents of Kabul. The president instructed the commission to conduct a study to determine potential of underground-water resources in the New Kabul City basin.
He stressed that Afghan engineers’ capacity should be utilized to design short, mid and long-term projects should be designed to attract foreign assistance to find out in which areas Afghanistan need foreign assistance.
President Ghani said that an effective mechanism should be devised to protect environment. He added that green space should be increased in Kabul city.
He said that a plan should be chalked out to make better use of the mountains surrounding Kabul city.
Experts believe that lack of a proper sanitation and solid waste management systems have resulted in contamination of underground-water resources of Afghanistan. They urged the government to exert its utmost efforts to prevent from further contamination of underground water resources.
