KABUL: President Ashraf Ghani promised to investigate the case of a parliamentarian murder, blaming the act as “the work of Afghanistan’s enemies”.
Obaidullah Barakzai, a representative from southern Uruzgan was shot dead by unknown armed men on Saturday in the adjacent province of Kandahar.
Nobody has yet claimed responsibility for the murder of Barakzai, who had lost his young son in a last year’s terrorist attack in Kabul. Taliban rejected having hands in the murder.
A number of lawmakers who had attended in Barakzai’s funeral on Sunday, accused the government of carelessness in what they call “chain murders”, saying that killing of prominent figures have increased, but none of them has been prosecuted by the government.
Barakzai’s family believes that his murder was carried out by foreign intelligence agencies.
Barakzai’s body was laid to rest near the parliament building in south part of Kabul, where some other members of parliament have been also buried.
The Hezb-e-Islami party that Barakzai was its member, also accused government of inattention to murder of influential figures.
Barakzai’s son said that his father was the victim of a foreign intelligence plot, asking the government to punish the culprits of his murder.
Barakzai had earlier said that his bodyguards were arrested by the government and he lacked guards and armored vehicles.
