KABUL: The Afghan National Security Advisor, Hamdullah Mohib said that President Ghani would not run as candidate in the early election proposed by the government to reach a political deal with the Taliban as part of the reconciliation process.
Talking to a press conference on Saturday, Mr. Mohib said that President Ghani would return the power to an “elected leader”. Referring to the Taliban’s leadership, Mohib suggested that the incumbent government has no right to return the power to a group of “40 individuals”.
The Afghan government accused the Taliban of being reluctant for peace, saying that the group is seeking observation of Pakistan’s interests in Afghanistan.
However, Mr. Mohib didn’t give further details on the so-called early election but said “we are ready to hold an early election whether that is within six months, four months or two months.”
The U.S. is pressing the government and Taliban to reach an early peace deal as it is looking forward to withdrawing troops from Afghanistan and ending the longest war in its history. Washington has recently offered the two conflicting sides with a new proposal that includes a senior meeting in Turkey and 90 days of reduction in violence that would be followed with a formation of transitional government.
