By Akhtar M. Nikzad-KABUL: The Afghanistan Independent Human Right Commission (AIHRC) alleged that due to the government’s negligence in women and children’s rights protection, the forced child marriages has remained a matter of concern.
“Lack of law enforcement, inappropriate traditions, existence of insecurity and immunity of culprits has been the main indicators for violation of women rights in the country,” said Sima Samar, chief of AIHRC.
Samar said that women did not see any considerable progress in the past three years.
She termed forced child marriage as a challenge against women and stressed the issue critically damaged the rights of female in the country.
Samar offered the three-year figures about underage marriages cases and claimed the violations level against women increased partly in the last three years.
“In 2015, we registered around 235 cases of forced child marriages while it was 225 one year before,” she mentioned.
Current law anticipates the legal marriages ages for male 18 and for female 16.
Chief of the AIHRC asked the government to make balance in the marriage age of girls to 18 years old.
The AIHRC counted the role of religious Ulema, education centers, Minister of Information and Culture vital important and stressed it needs the entire relevant administration to struggle against inappropriate tradition to decrease violation against women and children.
