AT-KABUL: The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres called on the Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah on Wednesday.
A press statement issued by the Chief Executive office said the two sides talked about finding better ways to defend the rights of Afghan refugees in foreign countries and finalizing the plan on their voluntary repatriation.
Guterres said he was happy to see the National Unity Government leaders’ struggles for return of Afghan refugees and taking notice of their plights. “Their commitment in this mission is a sign of hope for me,” he said.
Hinting at his decision to hold a quadripartite session among Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan and the UNHCR which will be held in Tehran, he said the meeting will discuss voluntary repatriation of Afghan refugees to their country.
He urged the government to work on the national plan for voluntary repatriation of Afghan refugees, adding that all concerned agencies should take part in implantation of this plan.
The Chief Executive stressed on the National Unity Government’s full support for voluntary repatriation of Afghan refugees to the country, and said the government will leave no stone unturned to address Afghan refugees’ problems and held them in voluntary repatriation. “It is our main responsibility to redress Afghan refugees’ plight and provide better environment inside the country to prevent their migration abroad,” he said. “We are committed to pay all out efforts in this regard.”
He said a high-ranking delegation will be sent to a number of European counties in near future in a bid to prevent expulsion of Afghan refugees.
He added the delegation will be tasked to take practical steps in supporting refugees’ rights and improving their living condition.
