AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: The government on Sunday stepped up to provide food and shelter suppliers to the Internal Displaced Persons (IDPs) after five people including two babies died in the Darzab district of the northern Jawzjan province.
Provincial deputy governor, Abdul Rahman Mahmoodi, said many of the families fled to Jawzjan from the neighboring province of Sar-e-Pul due to ongoing conflicts between security forces and Taliban insurgents.
“We have started providing food, money and other facilities to the displaced families,” Mahmoodi said.
Meanwhile, district governor, Rahmatullah Hashar, said that five people died in the bitterly cold weather and freezing temperature in the past few days.
“More people including children became sick due to cold weather and we need medicine urgently,” Hashar said.
Halima Sadaf, a member of the provincial council, confirmed the displaced people were in a desperate situation and many were living in the open air, under the tents, in mosques and schools.
“According to our information, five people died due to the cold weather in Darzab district and many of them do not have access to healthcare services,” she said.
However, local officials said that a group of doctors had been sent to the district to treat the sick.
It is worth to mention nearly one million people have been displaced due to the ongoing war this year.
