AT-KABUL: The Afghan government reiterated its commitment to improve human rights situation in Afghanistan and launch judicial reforms.
The Afghan government and the European Union (EU) held their first human rights dialogue in Kabul on Monday. The dialogue was opened by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Salahuddin Rabbani.
Afghan delegation was led by the Deputy Foreign Minister, Atiqullah Atifmal, and was comprised of a number of deputy ministers. The EU delegation was led by the European Union’s Special Representative/ Head of Delegation to Afghanistan, Franz-Michael Mellbin.
The two sides discussed different issues ranging from women rights, children’s rights, death penalty, torture, freedom of speech, to the rights of socially vulnerable and persons with disability.
The EU welcomed the efforts made by the incumbent government for improvement of human rights situation, including adoption of the national action plan for women, peace and security and the national action plan to combat torture.
The Afghan delegation reaffirmed the government’s commitment to implement its national and international obligation. The incumbent government also pledged to improve human rights situation and to launch necessary judicial reforms.
The EU delegation vowed to support Afghanistan in strengthening human rights and the rule of law.
The next human rights dialogue between the government and EU will be held next year in Kabul.
