AT-KABUL: The government was informed of the Taliban delegation visit to Uzbekistan, the High Peace Council said, adding that the visit took place with the coordination of Kabul.
A delegation of the Taliban chaired by the group’s head of political office, Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai, traveled to Tashkent on August 6th to talk to the Uzbek officials including foreign minister Abdul Aziz Kamilov.
Taliban in a statement confirmed the visit, saying that current situation in Afghanistan and the withdrawal of foreign soldiers from the country as well as security of the Uzbek projects in Afghanistan were discussed.
The High Peace Council Spokesman, Sayed EhsanTaheri, said Sunday that such visits cause hope for direct talks between government and the militants.
“The things that happen these days, are in coordination with us. The government of Uzbekistan asked for Afghanistan’s permission regarding the visit and the Afghan government agreed,” said Taheri, adding that if the insurgents hold talks with the government, Kabul would open office for them in any country that they want including Uzbekistan.
The government is yet to have official statement in this regard.
Political analysts believe that Afghanistan was far from the talks held between Taliban and foreign countries’ officials that would not be useful for the peace talks.
“If the process continues like this and the government is away from the talks, this would bring the government’s legitimacy under question and would not help the peace talks that Kabul is eager to hold with Taliban,” said political expert, Moshtaq Rahim.
