KABUL: The government says it has reached an agreement with Taliban insurgents to reopen schools closed due to insecurity in the militant-controlled areas, while some 400 schools are still closed by the insurgent group.
“In some areas, there were obstacles for students to go to schools, and some of schools were used as entrenchments. We demanded that education obstacles should be lifted and no group should interfere in education affairs,” Nooria Nozhat Nejrabi, spokeswoman for the ministry of education said Monday.
She said that insurgents accepted to allow students even girls in their areas to go to schools.
Some 9.6 million children are going to school across the country, according to the ministry, while 3.7 million with girls making 70 per cent are deprived from education mostly in the insurgent-controlled areas.
Based on the agreement, girls are allowed to study primary school in the Taliban-controlled areas.
Students are deprived from going to school mostly in the provinces of Ghazni, Zabul, Uruzgan, Kandahar and Helmand.
Taliban Spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid said that the group had not prevented students from going to school and would further cooperate with their education.
