AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, during a press conference in Kabul the other day said that the country would buy around 200,000 tons of wheat from Turkmenistan at less than 250 USD per ton and also intending to buy another 600,000 tons from Kazakhstan.
Ghani said that he had comprehensive discussions with Turkmenistan and the result of that is the country would have at least 200,000 tons of wheat at less than $250 per ton.
He made his remarks after his trip to Turkmenistan to inaugurate the TAPI gas pipeline project.
According to the survey by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, Afghanistan depends very much on imported cereals. Afghanistan is expected to import 2.1 million tons of wheat in the 2015/16 season, the FAO said.
Pakistan and Kazakhstan have been the two major exporters of wheat to Afghanistan since long but the government has announced in October that it would also seek to import wheat from Turkmenistan.
