KABUL: At least seven officers were killed when a group of gunmen stormed their checkpoint in the southwestern province of Nimroz, provincial officials said.
The incident took place in the suburbs of provincial capital of Zaranj, on the way to Char Borjak district, Bahram Haqmal, governor’s spokesman said Friday.
Haqmal said that the assailants shot dead the officer stood guarding, and subsequently opened fire at the other officers who were sleeping.
He could not identify the attackers, but said they took all the weapons from the checkpoint.
Taliban did not immediately comment on the incident.
Nimroz is bordering Iran’s province of Sistan and Baluchestan a s well as Pakistan’s Balocheistan province. It is considered an insecure area.
