AT-KABUL: The Minister of Finance, Eklil Ahmad Hakimi, urged Pakistan to take practical steps for peace in Afghanistan. He said that mere promises were not enough.
After returning home from a visit to Pakistan, the minister told reporters on Tuesday that he urged Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to take practical steps for peace in Afghanistan. “Kabul will trust Pakistan, only if the country takes practical steps,” he added.
Hakimi called on Nawaz Sharif in Islamabad on Sunday, where the latter said that peace in Afghanistan was in interest of Pakistan and the entire region.
Hakimi said that he also discussed the issue of economic connectivity between South Asia and Central Asia through Afghanistan.
Hakimi was leading a 30-member delegation in Afghan-Pak joint economic commission to discuss different economic and trade related issues with Pakistani officials. Pakistan’s side was led by Pakistan’s Finance Minister Ishaq Dar. Hakimi also met with Pakistan’s PM and other officials.
It is worth mentioning that during recent trip of Pakistan’s Army Chief General Raheel Sharif to the United States, Islamabad and Washington agreed to work together for resumption of stalled peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban militants.
However, the Afghan government said that resumption of the talks would be of no use, unless Pakistan dismantles terrorist networks on its soil.
