KABUL – A helicopter in the convoy of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi was involved in an accident on Sunday, according to state media, which did not specify whether Raisi was on board.
Unconfirmed reports indicate the helicopter carrying President Raisi crashed in East Azerbaijan province. State television announced that rescue efforts are underway but are being hampered by severe weather conditions and heavy fog.
Local media sources suggest that Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and other officials were also on the helicopter. President Raisi was in the province to inaugurate a dam project with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliev.
Raisi, 63, has served as Iran’s president since June 2021.
