KABUL: The Special Anti-Corruption Secretariat has referred Herat Governor, the mayor and 20 other top provincial officials to the Attorney General Office on the charges of committing fraud in the budget of Covid-19.
AGO’s spokesman, Jamshid Rasuli said that the provincial governor and three members of the provincial council were among the perpetrators.
The officials are accused of 20 Afs million embezzlement in money which was allocated by the government to combat the threat of the pandemic Covid-19. The exact date for the trial of the officials is not determined, but Rasuli said that the AGO demanded the court to examine the punishment of these officials.
Meanwhile, spokesman for the ministry of interior, Tariq Aryan said that Herat Mayor and his seven colleagues were arrested by the security forces on charge of corruption and bribery.
President Ashraf Ghani had founded the Special Anti-Corruption Secretariat on August 10th of 2019 with sole intention to investigate the administrative corruption in the government department.
