A 16-year-old Afghan refugee sleeping rough in the Hungarian capital Budapest has been hailed a hero for saving the life of a homeless man in front of a soup kitchen in Bérkocsis utca, District VIII, in the early hours of Thursday afternoon.
The drunken, homeless man was injured when he smashed through a glass door to the soup kitchen, which operates in the basement of a building. Splintering glass cut through the man’s artery, who immediately lost a large amount of blood, and among the standers-by, who were clearly shocked by what happened, only Aziz jumped to the man’s help, squeezing his arm with a belt. Speaking to the news website Index, a wittness spoke of his surprise at the “natural rutine” with which Aziz did what was right. The Afghan refugee remained with the injured man for around twenty minutes until a trained medic arrived. According to wittnesses, the man, who is still reported to be in critical condition in an intensive care unit, would have faced certain death had Aziz not been there to help.
According to a Facebook page that reported on the case, Aziz’s father was killed and he lost track of his mother and brother on the way to Europe. He has been sleeping rough in Budapest for several days. Contacted by Index, he said he saw many similar cases in Afghanistan and immediately knew what to do when confronted by the situation despite having no formal health care qualifications or formal first aid training. “I’m human, he’s also human, he was in troube, I knew what I had to do, I didn’t hesitate for a moment”, he said, speaking from the soup kitchen where he currently volunteers.
