AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: The Hezb-i-Islami Afghanistan (HIA), led by Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, has showed willingness to peace talks to end the prolonged conflict in the country, but urges peace talks should be held inside Afghanistan.
Dr. Ghairat Baheer who heads HIA’s political commission, has told Pakistani media that no group should remain out of the peace talks and reconciliation. Hinting to the controversy that persists among rival Taliban factions, he said that he doesn’t “see the talks would take place in the near future.”
Baheer told Express Tribune that war was not remedy to the problem rather he put his weight behind Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace talks.
His remarks come at a time when Afghanistan, Pakistan, the United States and China are expecting to meet in Islamabad soon.
The quadrilateral meeting would shed lights on methods how to resume second round of peace talks with the Taliban.
Hekmat Khalil Karzai, Deputy Foreign Minister will lead the Afghan side in the quadrilateral meeting. He was one of the key members of the first round of face-to-face Pakistan-brokered talks between Afghan government and Taliban early July.
“We have already floated comprehensive proposals for ending the conflict. We want all-inclusive talks to be held in Afghanistan to make them Afghan-owned in real sense of the world,” said the HIA senior official whose party was left out of the Murree Peace Process that collapsed following the disclosure of Taliban leader Mullah Omar’s death.
“HIA chief, Engineer Gulbuddin Hekmatyar has always backed meaningful negotiations and express willingness to join an intra-Afghan dialogue,” Baheer said. However, he added that agenda for the dialogue process should be transparent. “Talks should be based on ground realities and without any intervention.”
Baheer has stated that Hekmatyar would play an active part in politics if the situation becomes suitable.
