AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: The High Peace Council (HPC) confirmed that the second round of peace talks between the government and Taliban has been delayed. Questioning Pakistan’s sincerity, it said that Mullah Omar’s death is not the reason.
Deputy Chairman of the HPC, Maulvi Ataullah Ludin, said: “Though the Taliban’s leader, Mullah Omar, died more than two years ago, the neighboring country is using his death as an excuse to hurdle peace talks.”
Ludin confirmed that the second round of peace talks has been delayed till unknown time, after that Mullah Omar was confirmed dead.
The Taliban in a statement the other day officially confirmed Mullah Omar’s death.
Later in the day, the Pakistani foreign office said a planned second round of meetings set for Friday would be delayed at the request of the Taliban leadership. However, Pakistan in the statement hoped that the Taliban leadership will stay engaged in the process of peace talks.
“Mullah Omar’s death revelation in this critical juncture is not an accident, but was planned to undermine peace talks,” Ludin said.
He believes that Pakistan was not sincere in its cooperation in peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban. He blamed Islamabad for using Mullah Omar’s death as an excuse to delay the talks.
According to reports, revelation of Mullah Omar’s death has also triggered differences between the Taliban. Political analysts believe that the rifts among the Taliban will undermine peace process, if widened.
