AT Monitoring Desk: KABUL: A number of lawmakers and political experts believe that illegal armed groups were posing threat to security of people. They said that the illegal armed groups receive support from some political groups.
Nazifa Zaki, a member of the internal security committee of Wolesi Jirga (WJ), said that the presence of illegal armed groups in different parts of the country also hinder implementation of uplift projects. “The armed groups in northern provinces of Afghanistan are involved in robberies, kidnapping and murders,” Radio Azadi quoted Zaki as saying.
She said that some groups inside the government support the illegal armed groups. “Illegal armed groups are ruling Badakhshan, Faryab, Sar-e-Pul, Takhar provinces as well as Khanabad district of Kunduz province. The groups have deteriorated the security situation in the above mentioned areas,” she added.
Zaki said, the armed groups receive support form officials in the central government.
This came at a time that tens of residents of Daikundi province gathered in front of Wolesi Jirga, urging the government to get them rid of illegal armed groups.
Zalmai Warkdak, a political expert, urged the incumbent government to take all necessary measures to disarm illegal armed groups. He said that the government should urge people to register their weapons with the government. “This will help the government identify those strongmen who are using the arms in criminal activities,” he added.
It is worth mentioning that Kunduz Governor, Omar Safi, recently threatened to resign from his position if the central government didn’t take action against illegal armed groups in the province. He said that illegal armed groups were a bigger threat than the Taliban.
