NEW DELHI: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today hosted a dinner for Afghan First Lady Rula Ghani during which she assured her of India’s continued commitment towards assisting Afghanistan in becoming a peaceful and prosperous country.
Noting that Afghanistan has a very special place for India, Swaraj said the country is proud to be called Afghanistan’s first strategic partner.
She added that India is “committed to assisting Afghanistan in its quest to become an independent, peaceful and prosperous country”.”We see this as being vital for India’s security and the security of the wider South Asian region,” added Swaraj.
Swaraj noted that the countries of South Asia are undergoing rapid transformation. She said that the last 67 years of “development” experience in India has taught us the basic lesson that “if you empower the women of any community, the community is much more likely to allocate its resources wisely, feed and educate children better, invest in infrastructure that is productive and choose a environmentally sustainable development path”.
