KABUL: India has sent a shipment of 3,000 metric tons of wheat to Afghanistan, an Indian official said, as part of New Delhi’s pledge to provide 50,000 tons of wheat to the quake-hit country.
Arindam Bagchi, a spokesman for the External Affairs Ministry, said on Twitter that Delhi has “successfully completed a shipment of 33,500 MTs of wheat to Afghanistan in partnership with WFP.”
The Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock called for the distribution of the aid in coordination with the Islamic Emirate. “It is mostly apparent to the government, where the aid is needed–rather than to those who assess it from abroad,” said Musbahuddin Mustayin, a spokesman for the ministry.
The donations come as wheat and flour prices have skyrocketed across Afghanistan and foreign aid is expected to cushion the blow of hikes in commodity prices.
Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock says that Afghanistan will produce less wheat this year. This comes against the backdrop of a recent agreement signed by Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Investment with the Russian Chamber of Commerce to pave the way for the import of wheat and fuel to Afghanistan.
