KABUL – In a commendable gesture of solidarity, the Indian government has dispatched 40,000 liters of Malathion, an eco-friendly pesticide, to assist Afghanistan in combating the locust menace. The pesticide, transported through Iran’s Chabahar port, aims to safeguard crops and ensure food security in the face of this agricultural challenge.
The Ministry of Agriculture, under Taliban control, expressed gratitude for India’s timely support, emphasizing the crucial role of the donated Malathion in addressing the locust threat. This move aligns with India’s commitment to aiding Afghanistan in agricultural resilience.
The donation, valued at approximately 40 million Afghanis, covers around 80,000 hectares of land, providing a substantial resource for the ongoing campaign against locusts. Mawlawi Ataullah Omari, the Taliban’s Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation & Livestock, conveyed appreciation for India’s assistance, acknowledging the significance of the 40,000 liters of Malathion in safeguarding the agricultural sector.
The official handover took place on Monday, 22nd January, with the consignment arriving in Kabul via two trucks. Despite not officially recognizing the Taliban regime, India maintains a technical office in Afghanistan to facilitate humanitarian support. This collaborative effort reflects India’s historical commitment to aiding Afghanistan, previously extending support in the form of wheat and initiatives to address drug-related challenges.
