AT-KABUL: People in the northern province of Jawzjan are worried of what they call the increasing presence of foreign fighters affiliated to Daesh terrorist group there.

“Right now, there are 600 Daesh fighters in Darzab district most of them foreign nationals. They are launching attacks on the army and police outposts,” Rahmatullah Hashar, former governor of the district said Wednesday. “The foreign fighters are from Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, France, the UAE, Syria and Chechnya.”

He added that the Daesh fighters were mostly active in the districts of Darzab and Qosh Tepa, where they have established bases.

Security officials also confirmed the presence of Daesh’s foreign fighters in Darzab district, but said that a large number of them were killed in the night raids and airstrikes launched by the security forces, and they were not able to confront the security forces.

“We plan to launch a widespread operation in the entire province to remove domestic and foreign terrorists,” provincial police official, Abdul Hafiz Khashi said.

In a recent conflict between Daesh terrorists and security forces, 12 people were killed from both sides in the province.
