International, regional pressure pushed Pakistan to support peace process: HPC

AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: The High Peace Council (HPC) both regional and international pressure pushed Pakistan to offer its support for the peace process of Afghanistan.

The HPC Advisor for International Affairs, Muhammad Ismail Qasimyar, said that Pakistan should take some practical step in this regard.

This comes at a time that Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif recently offered his support to revive stalled peace process of Afghanistan.

Qasimyar believes that pressures from regional and world powers have compelled Pakistan to support peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban.

“The regional and world countries might have asked Pakistan end is support to militants and to sincerely support the peace process of Afghanistan,” Radio Azadi quoted Qasimyar as saying.

He added that if Pakistan is sincerely willing to cooperate in the peace process, then it should pave the ground for a ceasefire between the warring sides and should end its support to the Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan.

The Chief Executive Officer of Afghanistan, Abdullah Abdullah, also said that Pakistan should end its support to the Taliban, if it wants to cooperate in the peace process of Afghanistan. While talking at the plenary session of the Council of Ministers (CoM), Abdullah said that if Pakistan ended its support to the Taliban, then the militant group would not be able to fight.

Ruhullah Amin, a political analyst, believes that Pakistan is concerned about its own security, thus he is trying to have influence in any talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban. “This is a political and security priority for Pakistan to have control of any movement in Afghanistan, either peace talks or war. It would not tolerate others to have say in Afghan affairs,” he said.
