KABUL: The US Chargé d’Affaires Ross Wilson said that intra-Afghan negotiations are the political path necessary to a lasting peace in Afghanistan. Wilson said in a tweet on Tuesday that he shared his consultation with the government’s negotiations team. “Our Enduring Partnership has advanced human rights and liberty for 19 years,” he added.
Referring to the release of the Taliban prisoners from the government jails, ambassador Wilson said that he has expressed appreciation for the courageous decision that President Ashraf Ghani and Chairman of the High Council for National Reconciliation, Abdullah Abdullah were taking on the exchange of prisoners to lay out intra-Afghan negotiations.
The remarks made amid an intensive violence by part of the Taliban, which the Afghan officials said could possibly undermine the peace process. The Taliban accused the government of overplaying the process of prisoner releases. The militants said the government has forged the criminal background of the 592 prisoners, thus to create hurdles against the peace process.
Shuhabuddin Dilawar, a member of the militants’ Qatar based political office said, “The government is responsible for all bloody situations in the past four months, it should have freed our 5,000 prisoners by March 15th ; we were ready to release 1,000 of prisoners (Afghan security forces) within 10 days.”
The Taliban said that the violence would be continuing until a ceasefire was discussed in direct talks with Kabul.
