KABUL: The Islamic Republic of Iran is to provide Afghan migrants living in the country with more facilities, an agreement made during the visit of Afghan acting foreign minister Hanif Atmar to Tehran, where he met his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif, Iranian interior minister Abdol Reza Rahmani Fazli and other officials.
Geran Hewad, foreign ministry spokesman, said Monday that the safety of Afghan migrants in Iran as well as investigations to the recent incidents that took the lives of a number of Afghans were discussed in the meetings.
Some 15 Afghan nationals are alleged to have died after Iranian border guards threw them into a river along the common border. The incident was followed by another death of three Afghan migrants in Yazd province in the center of Iran. They died after their vehicle allegedly shot by Iranian police, caught fire.
Iranian officials shared the latest progresses in the investigations with the Afghan delegation, according to Hewad, who quoted Iranian side as promising to prevent such incidents in the future.
Kabul and Tehran also agreed on efforts for Afghan migrants’ safety, better life and human rights.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran assured Afghan delegation of good treatment with the Afghan migrants. The two sides also agreed on the transfer of martyrs and injured people of the Yazd incident to Afghanistan,” said Hewad.
The two sides discussed joint struggle against human trafficking, good security along the border and prevention of illegal cross borders.
