KABUL – Iran’s envoy to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, revealed on Thursday that Tehran allocates more than $10 billion annually to support Afghan refugees, despite insufficient aid from the international community.
“More than six million Afghans have sought refuge in Iran, placing immense strain on our limited resources,” Iravani stated during a UN Security Council meeting on Afghanistan. He criticized the lack of global assistance, particularly in the aftermath of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2020.
Iravani called for sustained international aid to countries like Iran and Pakistan, emphasizing the importance of enhancing Afghanistan’s infrastructure to enable the return of refugees. He urged global support for initiatives to strengthen Afghanistan’s capacity to provide housing, employment, and essential services, which he described as “crucial for regional stability and the dignity of returning refugees.”
The diplomat also stressed the need for a representative and inclusive government in Afghanistan to ensure long-term peace and stability. “An inclusive government can tackle challenges, prevent renewed conflict, and reduce refugee flows to neighboring countries. It also establishes a foundation for security and human rights, especially for women and girls,” he said.
