KABUL – A group of Iranian experts are now in Afghanistan to inspect the Helmand River as part of bilateral efforts to address a water dispute with the Taliban. The technical team aims to help resolve the standoff over Iran’s claims to its share of Helmand River water.
Hassan Kazemi Qomi, Iran’s special representative for Afghanistan, announced that these experts, visiting Helmand for the first time, will soon compile a report on water levels.
The issue stems from the Taliban’s refusal to permit the flow of Iran’s share of water from the Helmand River into Iran, leading to a drought in the arid province of Sistan and Baluchestan. Iran’s Space Agency revealed satellite images indicating that the Taliban government has constructed dams and altered water pathways to prevent water from reaching the Iranian side of the border.
Emphasizing the importance of adherence to the 1973 Hirmand River water treaty, Iranian officials assert that Afghanistan must provide Iran with its rightful portion of water from the river.
