KABUL – In a groundbreaking announcement that could reshape regional dynamics, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has issued a directive for “maximum engagement” with Afghanistan. The order, revealed by Iran’s Consul General in Mazar-i-Sharif, Ali-Reza Ahmadi, signals a significant shift in Tehran’s approach to its eastern neighbor, emphasizing economic ties, regional problem-solving, and a commitment to stability.
Speaking at a high-profile press conference, Ahmadi declared, “The Islamic Republic of Iran, under the guidance of Supreme Leader Khamenei, is prioritizing maximum interaction with Afghanistan. This directive underscores our belief that regional issues must be resolved by the countries within the region themselves.”
The announcement comes amid ongoing geopolitical tensions and the Taliban’s continued governance of Afghanistan. While Iran has not formally recognized the Taliban-led government, it has maintained extensive diplomatic and economic ties with the group. Ahmadi emphasized that Iran’s primary focus in Afghanistan is the “development of economic relations,” aiming to foster mutual growth and stability.

Ahmadi highlighted Iran’s commitment to bolstering trade, infrastructure projects, and cross-border collaborations. “Economic development is the cornerstone of our engagement with Afghanistan,” he stated. “We believe that stronger economic ties will not only benefit both nations but also contribute to lasting peace in the region.”

The recent visit of Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to Kabul, leading a high-level political and economic delegation, further underscores Tehran’s active diplomatic efforts.
