AT-KABUL: Former jihadi leader, Mohammad Ismael Khan said an interim administration needed to be shaped ahead of the next year’s presidential election.

A senior commander during the jihad years against the then Soviet troops and the Soviet-backed government, Khan was working as the governor of the western Herat province in the mujahideen government. He then ran ministry of water and energy under the former president Hamid Karzai.

He is now a senior member of the national coalition, an alliance made up of some political parties as the government’s opposition.

In an exclusive interview with the Kabul News broadcaster, Khan said that all the members of the national coalition believe that an interim administration should be formed before the presidential election, because the interim administration could lead the peace efforts and helped election legitimacy.

He added that three major parties (Wahdat, Jonbesh and Jamiat) were discussing to introduce a candidate for the presidential election.

Khan has been an outspoken politician who has criticized the government’s policies especially regarding the peace talks with the armed opposition groups.
