Kabul, Tehran ink MoU on strategic studies

AT Monitoring Desk: KABUL: In a bid to enhance bilateral ties further in the sphere of security and policy-making, Afghan and Iranian officials inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on strategic studies.

The MoU was signed at a joint seminar in Tehran by the chief of Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ strategic studies center, Faramarz Tamanna, and the general director of Political and International Studies Office at the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Mostafa Zahrani.

According to a news story published on Monday by Tasnim, an Iranian news agency, the two sides stressed on boosting mutual cooperation in different sectors.

At the seminar, pointing to the religious and cultural commonalities of the two countries, Zahrani said that Iran is keen to enhance cooperation with Afghanistan further in different areas.

Tasnim quoted him as saying, “Iran is ready to share its experiences, knowledge and capabilities with the Afghan brothers and sisters and cooperate with them in line with (efforts to) create stability, provide security and expand relations in all areas.”

President Ashraf Ghani visited Tehran on April 19, where he met with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, and Supreme Leader of that country Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei. In the two-day official visit, Ghani discussed different issues of mutual interests. Iran said that it was ready to help Afghanistan in the fight against Islamic State (IS).

Iran’s President emphasized on intelligence sharing to deal with the IS threat.

Rouhani said the two sides agreed to promote cooperation further in the fight against terrorism, extremism and violence in the region, particularly in bordering areas. He said that there is need for intelligence sharing, and if necessary, cooperation in military operations, because the existing problems are not restricted to a specific country.
