KABUL: The government says that Taliban had no excuse now to continue war and the militants need to bow to the wills of people of Afghanistan.
“Taliban’s prisoners are being released, so the war should not continue anymore,” said Dawa Khan Minapal, President Ghani’s Spokesman on Saturday.
“The government fulfilled people’s demand regarding the release of prisoners to pave the ground for cease fire and stop killing of Afghans. Therefore, the government is emphasizing on this demand.”
The Taliban signed a peace deal with the United States in February that encourages the militants to immediately hold talks with the government of Afghanistan. But the insurgents called for the release of their 5,000 fighters held in the government custody as a precondition for the intra-Afghan negotiations.
So far, 2,000 of these prisoners have been released and officials in the National Security Council say the process would continue.
Meanwhile, a delegation from Taliban is in Kabul to share information about the prisoners with the government officials.
Taliban have vowed to release 1,000 government employees they are holding.
Taliban showed a goodwill by agreeing a three-day long truce offered by the government for the Eid days, which still continues, despite some deadly attacks on security forces especially the recent one in Paktia province that killed 14 soldiers and injured three.
