KABUL: Flights from Ahmad Shah Baba International Airport in Kandahar have been suspended after a series of rockets struck the airport on Saturday night.
Three rockets hit the airport from an unknown location last night, causing little damage to the premises, Massoud Pashtun, in charge of Kandahar Airport, said on Sunday.
Civilian flights have been temporarily stopped because of security concerns, but military flights will continue, he added. But he said that civilian flights could resume by Sunday evening.
He said the airport’s technical teams are working on fixing the damages.
This is the second rocket attack on Kandahar Airport in the last few days.
On Friday, three rockets struck between the airport terminal and the air brigade.
As fighting escalates in Kandahar city, rocket attacks on this airport have also increased.
Ahmad Shah Baba Airport is located 16 km from the city of Kandahar, on the Kandahar-Spin Boldak highway, which has been the scene of heavy fighting between Afghan forces and the Taliban for the past few days in Dand district near the airport.
