KABUL – Former Afghanistan President, Hamid Karzai, has called on Sunday for global efforts to provide relief for earthquake victims in western provinces impacted by a 6.3 magnitude earthquake that left 2,000 people dead and 9,000 others injured.
In a message on X, he called charitable organizations and national business community to swiftly and decisively step in to provide assistance to those in need. The death toll from Saturday’s series of powerful earthquakes has risen to over 2,000, according to a spokesperson from the Taliban government, making this seismic catastrophe one of the deadliest to strike Afghanistan in the past two decades.
Hamid Karzai also offered his heartfelt condolences to the thousands of people who tragically lost their lives in the devastating earthquakes that rocked the provinces of Farah, Badghis, Herat, and Nimroz. He expressed deep sadness over the significant human and economic losses suffered by Afghans in these affected areas. Karzai sought solace for the departed souls to find peace in the heavens, extending his wishes for patience and a speedy recovery to the survivors who are grappling with injuries.
The initial quake, measuring a formidable magnitude of 6.3, unleashed widespread destruction, followed by relentless aftershocks. These tremors, as reported by the country’s national disaster authority, led to the tragic loss of dozens of lives in western Afghanistan on Saturday.
