Kabul: Afghanistan’s former president Hamid Karzai’s strongly condemned the explosion in the cricket stadium in Kabul which caused some of Afghans to be killed and injured.
In another event the UN Secretary-General’s Deputy Special Representative for Afghanistan has also condemned Friday’s explosion at the Kabul International Cricket Stadium.
Dr. Ramiz Alakbarov, who is humanitarian coordinator for Afghanistan, denounced the afternoon blast as an atrocious attack.
The explosion tore through the stands at the stadium in the Chaman Hozori area of the capital at around 16.10 during a T20 match between Band-e-Amir Dragons and Pamir Zalmi.
A statement from UNAMA said Alakbarov, who was present at the stadium at the time of the attack, wished the injured a speedy recovery.
“This blast is yet another harrowing reminder of the terrifying and sudden violence that the population in Afghanistan continues to be exposed to,” he said.
“Sports bring people hope, inspire children and generations alike, play a crucial role in breaking down barriers and bringing communities together, and serve as an important source of pride.”
The UN diplomat reiterated that directing attacks against the population, including sporting facilities, was strictly prohibited.
Dr. Alakbarov called for a thorough and transparent investigation, with perpetrators brought to justice.
