KABUL: Former president Hamid Karzai welcomed the gathering of clerics in Paktika, where the participants called for girls access to education.
The former president called on the Islamic Emirate to reopen the schools for girls above grade six.
“The stance and gatherings of religious scholars on girls’ education indicate the will of people in education,” Karzai was quoted in a statement released by his office.
On Tuesday, tens of clerics held a gathering in the southeastern province of Paktika, where they stressed on the reopening of schools for female students.
The participants of the gathering released a resolution stating that women should be provided education along with men.
On March 23, the girls students were told to remain home until a new decision about the fate of the girls’ schools beyond grade six is announced.
Meanwhile, the former mayor of Maidan Shar, Zarifa Ghafari, in an open letter called on the international community to cooperate with the current Afghan authorities regarding the reopening of schools for girls.
