KABUL: Former President Hamid Karzai congratulated the New Year to the people of Afghanistan and expressed hope that it be a year of lasting peace and end of war.
“I would like to congratulate the new year to all my brothers and sisters and I hope this year will bring a lasting peace to Afghanistan and that we will no longer witness war, bloodshed and the losing of our loved one,” he said Friday in a statement.
Karzai said that “unfortunately”, a great number of Afghans were killed and their homes were destroyed due to last year’s conflicts, bombings, explosions and aerial attack.
The former president called on the people of Afghanistan to keep national unity and solidarity and use the opportunity by supporting the peace negotiations to reach a durable peace and put an end to the “current tragedy”.
