KABUL: The US special envoy for Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad said that he discussed ‘economical development opportunities’ that would be following a sustainable peace in Afghanistan, with the Taliban Qatar based political office and Qatari officials.
“Adam Boehler, CEO, U.S. International Development Finance Corporation and I have concluded meetings in Doha with Qatar Investment Authority and Qatar Fund for Development, we discussed the possibility of co-investing in Afghan projects to consolidate peace and unlock regional prosperity. The potential to amplify investment impact in Afghanistan with like-minded partners is real,” Khalilzad said in a series of tweet.
According to him, the counterparts agreed that the development plans to support peace could not start too soon and that final hurdles would be overcome during the intra-Afghan-negotiations.
“Mullah Baradar and his team were engaged and the Taliban recognize all Afghans will have to make compromises in order to draw in the required investment in Afghanistan’s future,” he added.
The US envoy remarks came at a time while the Afghan peace process is facing hurdles. The US Department of Defense in a report to the US congress had accused the Taliban of remaining linked to the al-Qaeda terrorist network.
However the Taliban denied their links with the Al-Qaeda, saying that the report was published to mislead the people’s mindset of the people of Afghanistan against them.
Morever, some top commanders in the US military, talking in condition of anonymity, said that White House has given tentative approval to remain over 4,000 American soldiers in Afghanistan even after November- the time after the full withdrawal.
