KABUL: Russia’s Defense Minister says that the hasty withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan has led to an increase in terrorist activities in the region, calling for swift action to tackle this growing threat.
“Surge in terrorist activity in Afghanistan in the wake of the hasty withdrawal of foreign troops has led to a rapid deterioration of the situation in the country, which requires appropriate measures,” Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu said in a statement on Wednesday.
In a meeting with his Tajik counterpart Shirali Mirzo, Sergey Shoygu said that joint efforts are being made to neutralize threats rising from Afghanistan.
Russian and Tajik defense ministers also discussed the situation on the Afghan-Tajik border and joint efforts to neutralize threats related to the escalation of the conflict in Afghanistan.
Russia has a military base in Tajikistan and the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan has worried both countries.
Tajikistan president has ordered thousands of troops to be deployed along its porous southern borders.
Moreover, Moscow has sent weapons to Tajikistan to strengthen its defense capabilities. Russia has also sent in troops along the border for a joint exercise of Tajik, Uzbek and Russian troops.
Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan are scheduled to hold exercises on the Tajik-Afghan border next month.
