PUL-I-ALAM: Police on Sunday arrested the mayor of central Logar province from his office on corruption charges in compliance with orders from the president, an official said.
Logar police chief Brig Gen Abdul Hakim Ishaqzai told Pajhwok Afghan News the mayor, Ahmad Khan Ulfat, was arrested in the afternoon. He said Ulfat was in police custody and would be handed over to judicial organs soon.
He said the governor’s house had directed the police to arrest the mayor in compliance with orders from the president.
He said Ulfat faced charges including distributing and selling agricultural lands, administrative corruption, selling state properties illegally, misusing authority and fraud.
Ulfat had been previously arrested in 2014. He was appointed as the mayor in 2012 but was accused of administrative corruption and selling government lands within few months of his appointment.
He has also been accused of misappropriating municipality funds and local residents had lodged complaints against him besides staging protests. (PAN)
